particularly in terms of timing

after much too long has passed, finally the esprit de l’escalier superhero clicks that he has to go and do something about the crime he’d sensed and which he’d been too incapacitated by affront and confusion to at the time do anything about – and this sudden awakening, this revelation, this spirit, takes hold of him, always, while he’s descending a flight of stairs

his catching a criminal in the midst of committing even the most heinous crime is universally an anti-climax, to all parties involved
